Your Guide to Beautiful and Long-lasting Extensions.
Everything you need to know to keep your extensions healthy, beautiful, and looking their best between appointments.
Protect your investment.
Your extensions are designed to be enjoyed, but how you care for them at home plays a huge role in how long they stay beautiful. With the right routine and professional maintenance, your extension hair can stay soft, shiny, and beautiful for months.
01—The first 48 hours.
The extensions may feel snug and secure, like a headband.
You should never be in pain or need to take Tylenol after. If you do—please reach out asap.
Avoid putting your hair in a high ponytail or bun for the first 3 days. After that you can do either a high or low pony, no mid ponytail. This prevents unnecessary tension.
02— Washing your extensions.
I always recommend you double cleanse to keep the hair clean. Shampoo, rinse, shampoo again, rinse, condition, rinse.
Only use salon quality, hydrating products.
Extension hair craves moisture, so prioritize hydrating products over ones that are repairing or bond-building.
Use a deep conditioning mask once a month.
Always blow dry your extensions to prevent matting, tangling, mildew, or potentially mold from moisture build up.
03—Brushing.
Brushing is one of the biggest factors of extension longevity. Tangled hair leads to matting, breakage, and snapping of the hair.
Brush your hair regularly, from the base of the extensions all the way to the ends.
Hair is in it’s most fragile state when wet, so avoid aggressive brushing.
You can use any brush, but my favorite is a bore bristle + metal combined.

04— Drying and heat styling.
Always blow dry the extensions to prevent moisture build up, especially at the roots.
Never sleep with wet extensions.
A heat protectant and hydrating leave in conditioner are recommended.
Keep hot tools below 360 degrees.
Tehya’s Tip: When curling, I recommend curling your natural and extension hair together. This allows the two to blend into one another instead of leaving your natural hair sitting separately on top.
05—Sleeping.
Always go to bed with completely dry hair.
Brush gently.
Sleep in a loose braid or pony.
Silk or satin pillow cases can reduce breakage and frizz.
06 — Swimming, Workouts & Vacation
Avoid swimming in chlorine. Chlorine is a strong chemical that can damage extensions and turn blonde hair green.
If you go swimming in fresh or salt water—dampen hair first, apply a spray leave in conditioner all over, then braid the hair. Shampoo immediately after.
Never let sweat sit wet on the scalp or wefts. Use a blow dryer on a cool or low-heat setting to dry the wefts post workout.
Use a mineral-based sunscreen only. Avoid the ingredient Avobenzone—it can turn extensions pink.
Hats are great for high wind activities, like boating.
07—Maintenance appointments.
Schedule maintenance appointments every 6-8 weeks, and avoid going longer than 9 weeks max.
Allowing the extensions to grow out longer than recommended can create an imbalance in weight distribution, leading to damage of the natural hair.
During your maintenance appointment, I will completely remove the extensions and re-install.
With proper installation and at home care, the hair can last up to 9-12 months.
08— When to contact me.
if you experience any severe pain, pulling, or pinching.
